Happy 2010 and the start of a new decade

1.14.2010 | Opinion, Technology, WG Blog

First of all, Happy 2010, we hope it is a very happy, healthy and successful year and decade. So far it has been defined by the weather - or rather the snow, lots of it - and also some interesting events in technology including the unveiling of the Nexus One and the beginnings of a spat between Google and the Chinese government.

Over the last few weeks you will no doubt have seen the reviews of the past decade and how it has been defined by new technology from YouTube to Google, iPhones to iPlayer; to blogging, Facebook and Twitter. How we communicate, access information, listen to music, watch television and socialise has changed fundamentally in the past 10 years. So what does the next decade have to offer?

With the arrival of Google’s new mobile phone the Nexus One we are moving ever closer to everything being accessed through a single device – increasingly referred to as ‘convergence’. The days of multiple devices are numbered and this next decade will see the demise of a separate mobile phone, digital camera, iPod, laptop – they will all be amalgamated into one.

Likewise we will continue to consume information and communicate in new ways – content both online and via traditional broadcast media will converge through activities such as Project Canvas. Video and film will become the must-have online content.

How businesses and organisations provide information and communicate will need to change in line with the expectations of their future buyers, recruits and end users i.e. today’s teenagers who are growing up on YouTube, Facebook, iPhones and iPlayer.

And yet we know by looking back over the last decade that the chances are we haven’t even heard of, or possibly even invented, the technological invention, application or movement that will define this new decade.

However, what we can be sure of is that technology will continue to define our lives, our societies, culture and businesses for this new decade as well. It is up to us to keep up with new developments and advances – not to necessarily embrace them all but to make informed choices to ensure that we as individuals and as businesses make best use of technology both now and in the future.
